WEREWOLF BY NIGHT: Background Story and What We Can Expect from the New Special

A couple of weeks ago at the D23 expo, Marvel unveiled one of their newest projects which is scheduled to premiere on Disney plus on October 7, 2022.

Let’s break down who Werewolf by Night is and how he fits into the Marvel lineup.

BACKGROUND STORY

Werewolf by Night is Jack Russell, who was born in Transylvania as Jacob Russoff to parents Laura Russoff Russell and Gregory Russoff. The family curse began with Russel’s great- great- great grandfather Grigori Russoff and an unfortunate battle with Dracula. From there- the curse essentially travels down the family line, but is dormant, until Gregor Russoff (Russel’s great- grandfather) reads the Dark hold (a family inheritance) under a full moon. This reactivates the dormant curse and to make matters worse, Gregor “transcribes” the Dark hold into Grigori’s diary- which then creates a second copy. Within the comics, the dark hold ultimately disappears after Jack and a priest try to translate the book, and the priest becomes possessed by the dark hold’s previous caretaker- a mad monk from the 12th century.
