Publishing on Medium made Me want to Stop Writing: But Here Is Why I Kept Going

Maybe you’re like me and recently made your way into the Medium Partnership Program. Last month I was an eager writer ready to treat this like my personal journaling gig.

I had it all laid out. A personal journal dedicated to potential stories. How I would break a story from the comfort of my small town bedroom window. The money was sure to start pouring in. An overnight success story was imminent and in my immediate future.

And then as fast as my mental success rose to the top, my actual success hit rock bottom (or maybe I realized I never left the bottom).

After my stories stayed at around a couple of hundred views and no monetary compensation, I gave up momentarily.

I had to shift my perspective and ask myself who I am writing for. But most importantly, what am I writing for?

Who is to be determined…

I won’t put pressure on myself to find the audience I cater to. That will come with time.

What am I writing for?

Well, it’s a variety of things.

I would be lying if I said money isn’t a goal but it is not what keeps me returning to the keyboard.

Instead, it’s knowing that on whatever topic I write about, there are at least one or two people I’m resonating with.

Right now, that’s enough for me.
